Will the era of virtual love be coming? Clinical psychologist Ekaterina Semeshina, warning against excessive fascination with AI companions, asks the question: are they able to fully replace live people in the sphere of interpersonal relations? In an interview with Yuzhny Federal, the expert expressed her fears about the substitution of real interaction with a technological surrogate.
Semeshina emphasizes that AI partners, skillfully imitating empathy and support, create the illusion of closeness. However, unlike real relationships, this “connection” is only a reflection of the user's own thoughts and emotions. The lack of true reciprocity, according to the psychologist, deprives people of the opportunity to develop emotional intelligence and build strong interpersonal bonds.
Studies show that communicating with AI can temporarily alleviate loneliness and boost self-esteem. However, Semeshina warns of the risk of forming a dependency on a predictable and failsafe virtual partner. This, in turn, can lead to difficulties in real-life relationships that require compromise, effort, and the ability to deal with conflict. Southern Federal.
The psychologist emphasizes that despite convenience and comfort, AI partners cannot replace key aspects of human communication: touch, non-verbal signals, spontaneous reactions and, most importantly, the experience of overcoming difficulties together. Semeshina urges to use AI as a tool for developing communication skills, but by no means as a substitute for full-fledged human relationships. Otherwise, we risk losing the ability to empathy and intimacy, which will significantly impoverish our lives.
