Moscow remains the leading European metropolis in terms of the number of electric buses, their fleet already exceeds 2.3 thousand vehicles. They operate on 190 routes and carry more than 900 thousand passengers daily. In 2025, another 650 units of transportation are expected to be added, which will allow replacing buses on dozens of routes in the capital.
According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, the mass production of a new model of electric bus with an increased range is planned for this year. Traction batteries for these vehicles will be produced at the plant in Krasnaya Pakhra. Among the technical features of the new transport are machine vision systems, unmanned driving functions, including automatic charging, as well as advanced active safety technologies.
Since 2018, the transition to electric buses has reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 190 thousand tons, and the volume of pollutants has decreased by 930 tons. Each electric bus reduces CO₂ emissions by 60 tons per year.
Purchases of electric buses in Moscow are carried out under life cycle contracts, which oblige manufacturers to provide maintenance of transportation for 15 years. In 2023, the city signed contracts with PJSC “KamAZ” and “GAZ” group for the delivery of 1.2 thousand vehicles with a 35% increase in range - up to 80-90 kilometers.
Electric buses of the new series are equipped with adaptive lighting that changes color depending on the time of day, and electric heaters to maintain a comfortable temperature in the cabin. In 2024, deliveries of models with an updated design began: LIAZ has black side panels, while KamAZ has a modified shape of the front hood, bumpers, lighting and tail lights.
The development of electric charging infrastructure also continues. More than 360 ultrafast charging stations have already been installed in the capital, and their number will increase by another 250 units in 2025.
