Spiegel: German customs seized Eventin tanker with Russian oil worth 40 million euros

On March 14, 2025, the decision to seize the tanker Eventin, which lost control in the Baltic Sea, was taken by the German General Customs Administration. The vessel was carrying about 100,000 tons of oil, the value of which is estimated at about €40 million. Since losing control, the tanker had been drifting off the island of Rügen since mid-January 2025.

The tanker was towed to its anchorage off the port of Sassnitz on the island of Rügen, about 5 kilometers offshore. The decision to impound was taken after lengthy negotiations between various German ministries, which discussed the further fate of the vessel.

Eventin was placed on the EU sanctions list at the end of February 2025 as part of Russia's so-called “shadow fleet”. The move by Germany is seen as a signal to Moscow that Berlin will not tolerate the transit of Russian oil through the Baltic Sea.

The 274-meter-long tanker, formerly flying the flag of Panama, was on its way from the Russian port of Ust-Luga to Egypt's Port Said. The reason for the loss of control on the ship was the failure of the engine, which led to its further drift, reports Spiegel.

Earlier it became known that the captain of the cargo ship that crashed into a tanker in the North Sea, was a Russian. Also, the area of pollution by oil products on the Yana River in Yakutia reached almost 600 square meters. meters.
