Svetlana Akulova, Head of the Group for Development and Promotion of Products for Fleet of Advanced Payment Solutions, told what parameters should be taken into account when choosing car tires.
According to her, the speed and load index designations are located on the side of each tire. Usually they are next to the tire size and are a combination of numbers and letters.
Akulova in a conversation with “Southern Federal” noted that the load index indicates the maximum load withstood by the tire at a certain speed. To determine it, you can use a special table, where each number corresponds to a certain weight.
The speed index indicates the maximum speed at which the tire can be safely operated. This parameter relates to prolonged driving, not short-term acceleration.
Summer and winter tires have different load and speed index requirements. Summer tires are designed for higher speeds and temperatures, while winter tires are designed for lower temperatures and traction on slippery surfaces. Winter tires often have a lower speed index because they are designed for use in conditions where high speeds are less important.
Akulova stressed that choosing the right tires is important for the safety and longevity of the car. Before buying, it is worth checking the recommendations of the car manufacturer regarding suitable sizes and indices, the expert concluded.
